"Bubble-netting" is a cooperative feeding method learned by some groups of Humpback whales. They blow air bubbles in a circle around a school of herring, corraling them into an ever-smaller area. The lead whale gives a vocal signal - and they all lunge upwards at once, mouths wide open to scoop up the fish. It was a thrill to witness this last week in SE Alaska. This group of a dozen whales surfaced just 50 yards from the small skiff I was riding in! I was fortunate to quickly capture a couple frames of this amazing sight.
