Smoky Seahawk

Heavy wildfire smoke turns the sun into a sickly-orange disc. I positioned myself so the sun was directly behind this local Osprey nest. The Osprey quickly obliged with some nice landing poses.

Foghorn Season

"Foghorn Season" That special time of year! When it's still hot enough to keep all your windows open (we don't have AC). But it gets cool enough at night to form a dense marine fog layer. Which means we are "gently" awakened at 4:45am, when the ferry foghorns start blasting!

"Scattered Sunbreaks" - Upon moving to the Seattle area 25 years ago, we learned new local weather-forecast terminology. When I took this pic yesterday, the forecast was "Mostly cloudy with scattered sunbreaks".

Twilight Hunter

I spent almost a half-hour tonight stalking this heron, trying to get him lined up with Mount Rainier as the sun was setting, moving my tripod a foot at a time as he waded thru the water, hoping he wouldn't fly away. Finally got the shot just at the very end of the sunset light!

One of the highlights of the Bloedel Reserve is the Japanese Guest House - designed by noted Seattle architect Paul Hayden Kirk as a cross between Native American long house and Japanese tea house. Cool to walk around & peek thru the glass - not sure if they ever do tours inside.

Tonight's pleasant surprise was the moon popping up over the distant storm clouds!

Tiny Little Rainbow! Where? If you squint really hard you'll see it behind the ferry, between the dramatic storm cloud and the horizon. Only rainbow I saw all week...
